The reputation rests on pintxos: small Basque dishes laid along the counters of the bars in the Parte Vieja, and now across a widening stretch of Gros, ordered one or two at a time with a short pour. Beyond San Sebastian: Bilbao, The French Basque Coast And Rioja
The day-trip ring is generous. Hondarribia, with its own small airport, sits 20 km away. Bilbao is 105 km, its airport linked by a bus whose fare the Basque Government lists at 17.10 EUR for a run of roughly 75 minutes. West along the coast lie Getaria and Zarautz, with Zumaia and its Geopark beyond them. France is close too: the Euskotren Topo reaches Hendaia in 37 to 38 minutes, the French Basque coast stretches on from there, and Rioja wine country makes a longer day inland.

Why There Is No Surf Height Here
The wave figure in this feed measures wind sea, the chop raised by local wind, and not the swell that breaks on Zurriola. On 19 September 2026 the field read 0.5 m while the forecast text beside it described a northwest swell raising waves of 1.5 to 2 m. A surf number built on that field would call a good day flat, so none is shown. The sea temperature is a forecast for the whole Basque coast, not a reading taken at one beach.

Each area behaves differently as a base. The Parte Vieja puts you inside the pintxo bars and the noise that comes with them. Centro, just past the old town's edge, is the calmer commercial core near La Concha's eastern end. Gros faces Zurriola and suits the surf-minded. Antiguo sits by Ondarreta at the bay's west end. Amara and Egia are quieter residential spreads, a walk or a short ride from the centre, while Igeldo sits up on its own hill above everything, reached by the 1912 funicular.

When To Go, And How Much It Really Rains In San Sebastian
Rain shapes the calendar more than most visitors expect. AEMET's Igeldo station records 1,507 mm a year across 141 rain days, and even July, the driest month, averages 86 mm over about ten of them. August, the busiest hotel month of the year, is wetter than June, at 117 mm against 90. None of that makes it a poor destination, only a green and changeable one; pack a light rain layer whatever the month. The fixed dates are worth planning around: Tamborrada on 20 January, Semana Grande in the week of 15 August, the La Concha regattas on the first two Sundays of September, the film festival in late September, and Santo Tomás on 21 December.
July is the driest month on the record and it still brings 86 mm of rain across about 10 days. August fills the hotels, with 245,769 overnight stays in 2025 against 115,910 in January, and it is wetter than February, March, June, July and September: 117 mm in August against 90 mm in June. No month is dry: the year adds up to 1,507 mm over about 141 days with rain.
